Bolivia: nearly half its people are children living in poverty

With nearly half of Bolivia’s population being children, poverty hits younger generations the hardest. Many lead lives on the streets, alone and without family. Kids at Play came to Rurrenabaque to support Familia Feliz, an orphanage that takes in children who are orphaned, abandoned, neglected or abused, and gives them a family-like home where they are loved and can grow up with a fair chance at life.

When we arrived in 2014, the situation was dire. Clean water was not reliably available. For children already living on the margins, this was a health crisis waiting to happen. We knew immediately what the first priority had to be.

The project

A water well that became the only clean water source in the region

In 2014, Kids at Play built a clean water well at the Familia Feliz orphanage in Rurrenabaque. The urgency of the decision became clear almost immediately. Shortly after the well was completed, Bolivia experienced a devastating regional flood. In the aftermath, the well at Familia Feliz was the only source of clean drinking water in the entire surrounding area.

Familia Feliz orphanage

Familia Feliz (Happy Family) in Rurrenabaque takes in children who are orphaned, abandoned, neglected or abused and gives them a safe, loving home. Their mission aligned perfectly with ours. This partnership led Kids at Play to return to Bolivia again in 2017 for a second project.

Challenges and lessons

The flood that proved everything

We built the well knowing clean water was urgently needed. What we could not have predicted was the scale of the flood that hit Bolivia shortly after. When the floodwaters came and cut off the region, the well we built at Familia Feliz became the only clean water source for miles around. That moment made clear that the right project at the right time does not just help the children it was built for. It helps everyone.
